Confusianism

Founder: Confucius (latin translation), Kong fu-zi was his real name. (551-479 B.C.)

Religious Texts: Analects (also known as the Conversations)

Teachings:

  1. Confucius was primarily concerned with the proper carrying out of societal duties.
  2. His primary principle of ren was that one should have an attitude of seeking the welfare of other people.
  3. His second principle, called li, deals with doing the right thing at the right time. This principle should be the guide to all social interactions.
  4. Filial piety was, for Confucius, of utmost importance. The respecting of parents, elders and husbands was the basis for a good social order.
  5. Followers of Confucius often practice ancestor worship.
  6. Confucius had a clear role and or attitude for each member of society. These roles are summarized below.

father: kindness
son: filial piety
eldest brother: gentility
younger brother: humility
husband: righteous behavior
wife: obedience
elder: humane consideration
junior: deference
ruler: benevolence
subject: loyalty
